The Wonders of You

This month I read a book from an author I personally met in a Shaklee business meeting. Mr. Nathaniel Goetz. I enjoyed the book so much I asked him to be on the TLTMOVEMENT podcast, where we broke down its principles for our young leaders.

This book was very enlightening to me and goes way beyond the category of “self help”. Master minded by his father and put to paper years later by Nathaniel, they break down the different personality groups in a way i’ve never heard before. Instead of the traditional route of 4 personality groups (Commonly referred to as Director, Socializer, Thinker, and Supporter) they make it simple by breaking people into only 2 groups, “The Starter” & “The Finisher”. This book not only explains these two energies well, but emphases that we are born into one of these groups and we can never change it. Its just who we are, and the faster we accept it and step into it we can live a purpose filled life! Often times we want to be like the other type of person and so we adopt their characteristic strengths. We can get good at them, but we will never feel fulfilled trying to be something were not.

In short: The Starter is one who’s energy is up and down. They get excited about things quickly, act spontaneously, very social and care about people over other commitments like time or money.

The Finisher is one who’s energy is linear. Constant. They like schedule and routine. They’re analytical, detail oriented, and take time processing things.

This is a VERY simple explanation. Take the quiz on Nathanials site to learn which one you are: https://peoplelogics.com/get-started/ Or better yet read the book!

After reading, I feel like I have greater understanding of the true importance of communication and meeting someone where they are at. I understand how I don’t necessarily want someone just like me on a team or in a relationship because I NEED the other people group to be complete.

My top take away from this book are:

  • I am a starter! A high very functioning starter. I am born this way and I shouldn’t dislike the energy I was born with, but embrace it and utilize it! I am not broken or defective because I feel super happy on top of the world one day and then in a valley super sad the next. Someone who is constant in their moods and actions are not any better than me, but when we team up we can do amazing things. I take risks and bring the social aspect, they’ll get the details right and finish it up! This is how God designed it and understanding that a team needs two energy types to succeed is uplifting.

  • We are often times the opposite energy from our parents. This is designed to compliment each other, but without understanding this can turn into a problem with unrealistic expectations of “why can’t you be more like me”?

Would recommend this book. Very easy read, I finished it in a night. Tune in for the podcast next week.
